OSG is destined to compile and work on a lot more Unix systems than
those who are supported by FlightGear (at least nowadays, we were
having a few more in the past).
Quite a few of these systems are following conventions about the naming
of library-directories which are different from the respective habits
on Linux. Thus, storing 64-bit libraries in "$prefix/lib64/" (on
platforms which might support different word-sizes) doesn't look that
bad as being cross-platform solution,

        Martin.
