It's perhaps that ffmpeg has heavily optimized decoders, and probably
optimized encoders for some formats, but not all. I'm not sure, but
they have different goals so it's possible that there are significant
differences in implementation. mp1e is just fast, and quality is
decent.

I spent some time tweaking the options for what I felt was a balance
of quality and speed, while keeping in mind the limitations of the
hardware. There is more control I suppose...
