I wholeheartedly disagree with any recommendation of Global Village.  They
are the worst modem company in the world.  They require that you use their
proprietary software to get the modem to work, and if you lose or misplace
the software it costs you $70+ to get another copy.  They are the AOL of
Modems.  Their failure rate is relatively high, and their performance is
relatively low.  GV is now out of business and were bought by Boca Research
and then I think they dropped them as well...I could be wrong there though.

U.S. Robotics make great modems.  They will run with the Mac OS alone (read:
NO ADDED PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE) and their speeds and reliability are better
than GV.   

I would pretty much choose ANY modem EXCEPT FOR Global Village.
