it's probably a problem with the configuration of the router or the 
i-book.  do you/have you gotten any other computers to work with your' 
current setup?  what router are you using?  how is the i-book and the 
desktop configured for network?  as long as the router has ports left 
you don't need to add a switch, when you run out of ports on the router 
you can add a router/switch/or hub to one of it's ports to get more 
ports but there's no reason to until you run out of ports.
