Well, I'll throw in a vote for the other side. I bought a three year extended warranty on my HP photosmart printer. I've had it completely replaced once and serviced a couple of times through the warranty.
If you check ebay regularly for digital cameras, as I do, you will see there are plenty of broken digital cameras out there. Check reviews on www.epinions.com and you will see many owners have cameras that crap out in the first year. Whether an extended warranty is worth it or not is up to you. It is basically insurance. Digital cameras are complicated beasts. Having used one professionally at the newspaper I work at for the past six years, I don't think they stand up to heavy wear well. I can tell you I have a couple of nikons that are 20+ years old around here, but I will not be able to make that claim about any digital cameras (even though a digital would be obsolete after 2-3 years). And, they are never worth repairing. If they break, they're pretty well toast because of the fact the repair price is usually 50-70 per cent of the cost of a new camera. We have a few dead cameras sitting around that just weren't worth repairing. This decision is one you will have to make. It is simple. Do you want to pay $50 for the comfort of three years of security or do you want to gamble that your camera will stand the test of time and spend the money on more media, as some have suggested. If you get a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing your camera is covered for three years for a mere $50, buy the extended warranty. If you think it's a scam and you'd rather have the $50 than don't do it. One thing is for sure, though, digital cameras do break, and the repair price is normally so exhorbitant that they are not worth repairing. Just my two cents.
