About the AGP card, what do I have to do in order to use it in a mac?  I've
seen people talk about flashing, firmware upgrades, etc.

If you go with the Radeon 8500, you can get a Mac version, which used to be like twice as much as the PC version (although I haven't checked prices lately), which is why some people bought a PC version and flashed it with Mac ROMs. However, it sounds like way more of a pain than it's worth, with even a chance of making the card unusable.
