Hi Shaun,
Interesting enough I haven't had a lot of formal computer training
myself. Truth is most of what I know is through direct
experimentation, trial, and error. It was only when I went to college
that I got some formal training, IE the paperwork to back up what I
actually know, but a person can learn quite a lot through just taking
an old PC and experimenting with things on his or her own. The problem
with most people is they are too afraid of braking it to really
experiment with it much.
However, getting back to the topic at hand if you want to break out of
your blindy experience you are going to have to invest both time and a
little money in a more mainstream setup. For instance, the Logitech
F710 wireless controller is a decent controller for a newbie, is small
and portable, and works with a number of audio games. As I mentioned
before I can keep mine in my laptop case along with the USB receiver
out of the way when I don't need it, and it only cost me about $49
USD.
You could start off playing some arcade games like Troopanum II to get
use to the controller, and then graduate to something more complex
like 3D Velocity or Rail Racer. The more you get use to it I think the
more you will like it.
Cheers!
