Actually Thomas, James did have plans for a boss monster at the end of the 
game. If you downloaded and read the manual it said you would gain the final 
piece of the scroll and gain untold wealth as a result...assuming of course 
that you could defeat the guardian. As to what sort of creature the guardian 
might be I don't know, but given he mythology and legends of that time I'd 
imagine either some sort of undead perhaps, or a molevolant spirit of some 
kind or, similar to Zelda, some animated stone statue not unlike the Armos.
Time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so.
