Well, that does happen in this country as well sadly. I'm not sure why my secondary school began with hal, ----- maybe things were different in the early 90's, pluss my brother already had a very good relationship with dolphin anyway and was a major fan of luna as a magnifyer. After some experimentation, I did try win vision briefly at one point, which was able to give amazingly fast response with decktalk thanks to a hardware synthesisor box, ----- which proceeded to break down completely within six months of me using it, at which point I was given a copy of supernova to be going on with, ---- and it actually turned out the stuff which had attracted me to trying win vision in the first place was quite doable with a more up to date version of Hal than the one I'd been used to previously.

I did experiment with jaws for a few days on a computer at a society for the blind in Nottingham, ---- more for interest sake than anything else. The profound difficulty in changing basic settings such as reading of capitals I found quite irritating. At the time I believed this was because I was unfamiliar with Jaws, ---- now though i actually wonder if it's just that (as Tom has said), jaws doesn't really make altering settings too easy anyway.

Exactly Dark. That's the only reason I was such a staunch JAWS user for ten years. And the only other option I did experiment with was OutSpoken, the first screen reader for Mac. And to be quite honest I absolutely hated that. But the reason, at least here in the US, that so many people support JAWS is that state agencies for the blind are contractually obligated by FS to teach their clients JAWS. He who is valiant and pure of spirit may find the holy grail in the castle of aaaaggh. ----- Original Message ----- From: "dark" <d...@xgam.org>

I think what surprises me about screen readers though is the way that people tned to assume because jaws does something it's universal.

I've seen a good few games which say "unload your screen reader" where in actual fact "your screen reader" just means jaws and it's irritated key shortcut business, and window eyes, system access and Hal don't need to do this at all.

The only sad thing is Jaws is so often presented as the only system available, people do assume that it's the only workable solution and don't considder alternatives.

Beware the grue!
