I'm working on PC (XP) and had the same issue. I did save off as .doc extension
and MSWord was fine. It (Word) in fact prompted to load a converter to deal
with the 'guts.' I accepted and all seems fine.I was playing with saving text
files off in ASCII and a bunch of other formats. It works. But yes the file is
still read/displayed as text file.

It would launch Word, and Word would be told to open it, which would
then puke on the file because the bytes inside are not what a Word
document would be. At best, it will display a nice error saying,
"This is not a Word document." At worst, it would actually attempt
to open the thing, and either crash or produce a document full of
garbage.

Not at all.

IIRC, he's working on the Mac, not on Windows. You also mention
creator and type above, which also apply to the Mac.
But even on Windows, I wouldn't expect Word to be smart enough to
recognize that some file with a ".doc" extension is actually an RTF
file with an incorrect type.
