Some versions of Word may automatically open (convert) mislabeled docs to Word--essentially, that's what you're doing. Some versions may not. Joe is right. You're depending on someone else's app and its undocumented feature to do your work.

It may work today, and break 6 months from now. Even if I tested this with MS Word 5, 6, 95, 97, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2004 on both platforms, I wouldn't trust this feature.

The best I would do on the Mac platform would be to, say, give my file a type of text and the creator MSWD. It'd open in Word then as a text file.

I'm working on PC (XP) and had the same issue. I did save off as .doc extension and MSWord was fine. It (Word) in fact prompted to load a converter to deal with the 'guts.' I accepted and all seems fine.I was playing with saving text files off in ASCII and a bunch of other formats. It works. But yes the file is still read/ displayed as text file.
