Actually, there should be no surprise that it works so well, nor is
any great faith required in Microsoft's abilities. The task is a
fairly trivial one.

As you know, RTF has definite (and publicly available)
specifications. You can find them on the Microsoft Web site.
True but not relevant; SaveStyledEditField does not generate an RTF
file on the Mac. It generates a SimpleText file instead, which is a
text file with style data in the resource fork.
