Hey guys,
having recently gone through this, this is what I would suggest. I
got my private and instrument in a Piper Archer. However I flew anything
I could get my hands on. I accumulated about 300 hours in planes with
pedals. Maybe a little more than you need. Once I decided I wanted a
coupe for sure, I took some rides with a good friend that had a "CD". As
a private pilot I could log any time I was pilot in command of a SEL
airplane. You do not need a seperate sign off to fly a coupe. So I flew
with him for about 5 hours while I was buying mine. When I got the
insurance I told them I had around 5 hours in a coupe and that was fine
to them. Half of the people working this companys dont know a coupe
doesnt have pedals. By 5 hours I felt comfortable flying mine 900nm
home. Abour once a month I fly in an Archer or 172 to keep comfortable
with pedals. This was a painless way of doing things. Whoever teaches
you to fly a coupe does not need to be an instructor. I guess that is
the moral of the story.
Good Luck
