It may be politically incorrect to say this, but could it be that the middle class actually commits less criminal acts than the other sections (including the upper class)? I say this out of personal experience and the experience of my peers, not based any social theory learned at school (thank heavens, I didn't learn any :). The middle class consider themselves to be, well, in the middle - they think they have far too many things to lose unlike the poorer classes and too little political, muscle or money power unlike the rich class. When I wanted to get involved in campus politics during my college days, the first advice I got from the elders was that you have your entire life and career to lose if you are not careful - see, you have no political connections and absolutely no money - if the people who have both decide to take advantage of you, you are lost. The fear of authority, the sense of helplessness in the face of powers that be and the realization that you have everything to lose is a powerful deterrent for many middle class people from breaking the law.
Of course, this has its own downside like emasculating the society's response, but that is a different thing. Best regards, Murali.
