As I am running behind the discussion, just couple of observations. 1. 'Prisoners' taken as a political identity is a separate group, I believe. As to the content Ranjith's surmise might be true. I am not quite sure whether you are thinking of women prisoners as well while speaking on it. To borrow a term from Devika's writing, they are all subjected to abjection. That mean, marginalized among marginalized. Dalit, women etc. are relatively accepted categories [ may be due to appropriation in developmental discourses] by now. Sex workers, aids patients, sexual minorities, prisoners are all considered to be outside of the definition of 'malayali' citizen. They are the other of malayali identity. So, malayali's rights can't be thought of without simultaneously denying them even the right to be a citizen. In Kerala, where the major chunk of people are middle class, the public sphere is determined by their interests.
2. In present day Kerala, who are the struggling groups? Prisoners, sex workers, fishing community, adivasi community[ in plachimada, aralam..]... Who is in the street who is in drawing rooms [witnessing to the wars waged on their behalf by heroes in news channels ]? I agree, certain business classes also occassionally come out demanding their 'customer' rights . 3.Nobody here stand with the rights of those who belong to Muslim, Adivasi , Dalit, Sexual minorities ... Just consider the way in which Malayali public responded on issues like Mariam Rasheeda, Sirajunneesa, Madani, C.K.Janu, life term prisoners, Rajani S Anand... 4. As in the case of Rajani S Anand, cetain hegemonic resposnes demanded a virginity test on the dead body so that nobody will be standing for her once it is proved that she is a 'bad girl'. Bad girls by defenition deserve no rights. That is the reason why the attempt in all rape cases is to probe the vctim's track record and prove her to be a bad women. Everybody here consider any atrocity commited against 'bad women' as legitimate.. Any human rights denial to prisoners as rightful... --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Green Youth Movement" group.
