This moderator seems to think that we are engaging him
without doing our background study! He wants us to
study before we talk to him! Also he has suggested his
own writing as a primer! The subject-line of one of
his previous mails read : "whatever It might be." It
was as if everyone who disagreed with him were talking
non-sense. We are lucky to have an ego-less,
gender-less non-identity as our moderator. We are all
ready to learn from others provided the moderator does
not deny us the opportunity.

In a previous posting too I noticed your reference to
modernism. What is this term doing here? Modernism is
a movement in art, literature, architecture etc. You
might have meant Modernity - which is a historical
condition which made certain moral political and
cognitive values possible. Modernism is one of the
several movements which modernity made possible. Hope
you are not confused by some Wikia entry on
post-modernism. ( is this relevant to our discussion?)

If you care to read my previous mail you would see
what my idea of an acceptable criterion for moderation
is. Moderation is called for when someone's
intervention makes a manipulative use of some specific
feature of digital technology or media. This is not
comprehensive and needs to be supported by a clear
definition of conditions for material adequacy. But I
think it is a reasonable starting point.
This is my scale. However, You have not yet given us
your rules. Your yet-to-be written rule is still in
private circulation among the moderators.
Now let us look at the present case in the light of my
criterion. You have made two charges against ranjit.
1) his posting exhibits egoistic male identity - (
what is this? I thought feminists have shown us that
male identity is super-egoistic and not egoistic!)
2) He is wasting other people's internet access time.
No1 does not involve manipulative use of any specific
feature of the digital. This tendency, if present,
needs to be exposed and one must use the power of
argument to correct it. However, it does not attract.

No 2. is a better candidate for considering
moderation. However, even if Ranjit's postings are a
sheer waste of internet resources they do not involve
manipulation. Moreover "wasting internet access" is a
general feature and does not involve specific features
of the media. Anyway, even those who disagree with
Ranjit have not said that his postings are waste of
resources.

Nobody is asking for radical experiments. Your use of
the digital features smacks of feudalism. They not
indicate any beyond-the-modern spirit.

I agree with you. There is no magical formula to
change these vertical structures. Patient debates and
discussion in this list could provide support to
activists who are trying to change them. But the
moderator should not hope to jump the gun, shoot down
his enemies and ensure caste, class access democracy
even before the debate begins.
