Anytime I have taken off the cover, you cant get the gasket to hang onto the cover when you replace it unless you use some type of sealant (yamabond is the best I have found) to get the gasket to adhere to the cover. Also you use a small amount of sealant in the half moon space (my brain cannot for the life of me remember the proper name) filled by the rubber gasket to make sure there is no oil leakage. I have been told by mechanics that a lot of valve adjustments in busy shops are done by "ear" and the cover never comes off. However in your case they did take off all the bodywork for some reason.
