Hi all: One problem that came up in a similar thread on this forum years ago was what someone else has alluded to already-- especially if you are trying to simulate education with CPs invested-- is the GURPS skillset.
In math, for example, as a math major, one invests say 1 CP in differential equations when one takes that class. Skill is theoretically IQ-2 in "differential equations". Another class in vector analysis, same thing. But in GURPS, it's all the Mathematics skill. So estimating degrees likely depends less on CPs/time invested, and more on assembling a GURPS Skill set *specific to a major*. Then I think you develop tiers-- what are the major and minor skills for that class of major, and then assign a skill level, not *initially* worrying about points. For advanced degrees, one can even have a small set of "specialty" skills that would be of higher skill than even "major skills". Some parameters: Minimum skill levels need to be set for major and minor skills in each major of study-- a training institute will for the most part demand that certain requirements be met. The breadth of major skills expands with the more accomplished degree as much as the skill level numbers go up. As one gets more advanced degrees, some minor skills jump to the major category, and some to the specialty category. Thus, an AA may not have any major or specialty skills, whereas a PhD will have several. You can set a total CP limit based on years of study-- if an IQ 9 PC wants a Ph.D., they'd better document it took them 10 years to get it-- if at all, for example. But this isn't completely fair, because as a math major, for example, one is going to invest the equivalent time of a billion CPs in the Mathematics Skill, but for purposes of GURPS their Math skill may only be IQ+2 or +3 despite that. In contrast, a PE major will have several athletic skills, along with several biology/physiology/first aid and other skills, that in order to meet minimum skill criteria for that degree, that a lot more CPs need to accomplish that in the PC. So flexibility is necessary. Personally, I think the initially suggested skill levels proposed for the degrees: Associate Degree = IQ Bach Degree = IQ+2 Masters Degree = IQ+4 Doctorary Degree = IQ+6 is too high. I'd be more into a Masters' Degree, for example, having a single specialty skill at IQ+3, several major skills at IQ+2, and a handful of minor skills at IQ+1. I agree with others that advanced education goes part and parcel with such skills as Sex Appeal, Carousing, and let us not forget-- Fast Talk, and Savoire-Faire (Frat parties, classroom, brown-nosing, blah blah!)-- OK, maybe not Savoire-Faire... Just my thoughts. -vk _______________________________________________ GurpsNet-L mailing list <[email protected]> http://mail.sjgames.com/mailman/listinfo/gurpsnet-l
