the benefit of mixing things up is a simplified rule. You have a 
sensor skill, add speed/range, add countermeasures, and there 
you are ...

3E also has a very inconvenient minimum size for FTL commo, which 
does not mesh all that well with the size of FTL sensors and FTL
scan detectors -- you should be able to morse with your FTL radar,
then.
