Could it be an option, that a cargo might consist of biofreight + life support module? It would have disadvantages since you can't use ecconomics of scale with power and such (though the freighter might have excess power for such purposes) but the freighter gets more verstantile and you don#t carry unneccessary life support equipment in ordinary cargo runs.
