I can see no other way to provide the life support for a herd of
cows or horses unless they are frozen -- and which GM would pass
the fun of live cargo? Not even a passenger ship would have that 
much spare life support. 

Another advantage of separate life support for the animals would
be that it doesn't have to be as redundant as the main system. 
If things go wrong, the colony gets frozen meat, not livestock,
while the crew section remains unaffected.
