Gypsies and like, how do they keep their population gene pool viable?

One thought here: while many people think of family ships along the
Heinleinian model, it seems not implausible to me that they could
recruit as well as bringing up the children. This helps both with
exogamy and with technology retention. (For that matter, some kids are
going to want to leave...)
For that matter, if a ship's reliably going to come back in a few years,
they might even send a kid out to board and go to university - probably
under the supervision of family members too old to be useful on the
ship, to make sure they don't get to like planetside life too much.
