That reminds me of Rimrunners by C.J. Cherryh. There was that scene
where Bet stood freezing in a half-assembled suit, trying to adjust
the feedback control system. But Cherryh's suits feel lighter than
what I have in mind here.
I was thinking more of the Zero-G Stormtrooper powered armor in the
Star Wars RPG by West End Games. Big enough so that there is a hatch
in the back of the suit.

Are there hatches for the legs as well? Otherwise how do you get your legs
in, in any positon? You need wiggle room to get in, and having that, and
when the suit is operative fill it out, to make a good fit seems odd.
But if you have hatches, you could have ones that come off completly,
rather then having hinges. And if you have that, you can lie or sit on the
hatches, while the rest of the suit is put onto you.
And a heavy suit does not contradict that it consists of many disjoint
parts. You can have forward lower leg, backward lower leg, forward upper
leg, backward upper leg, forward torso, backward torso ect.
