It looks like I'm on a role today with posting to the mailing list.

I wanted to point out a flaw with the sv_tags system.

How is it going to know about programming changes?

What if I programmatically un-nerf the demoman/soldier rockets?
What if I programmatically make all weapons do insta-gib damage?

What if I do anything programmatically that does not add to sv_tags?

My server shows up in the vanilla server, when it blatantly is not vanilla.
That's what happens.

And I'm not doing anything to 'force' my server into the internet list to
have this effect.

Now I could add "sv_tags" "unnerfed_demosoldier,instagib".

Oh wait, if I do that I might as well shutdown my server because my server
will be on the custom tab and nobody clicks on that.

Damn, so much for using sv_tags to better describe my server.

"We've been working on a solution to these problems that we hope will make
sense, solving the player's desire to search for specific settings, and the
server operator's desire to have better descriptive tools for their server.
The concept is similar to web page metatags, where server operators can
specify descriptive tags in any manner, and clients can search for servers
by specifying the tags they're interested in. Some tags are automatically
filled in, based on server convars. For example, in TF2 we've removed the
restrictions on a variety of server options (like friendly fire & respawn
wave times), and now the tag system will automatically add a tag when
they're changed, so that customers who want to play on these servers can
easily find them."

Sv_tags doesn't do any favors for server operators. Server operators will
avoid it like the plague because putting anything in the tags means you lose
your player base by the time the server sends the next heartbeat.

On top of that, it does not do the player any favors either, because now
potential players won't know my server is insta-gib with un-nerfed
demo/soldier until they connect to it and play.

Everybody loses.

Disclaimer: This is just an example situation, my servers are not insta-gib
and I have not un-nerfed the demo/soldier ammo.
