May I second the good things you have heard about the Linksys WRT54GL? I was
using a D-Link DI-624 until this past winter which I liked because it offers
DHCP with static and dynamic IP addresses. Unfortunately it kept rebooting
itself so downloads and (even worse) VPN and Citrix connections would get
disrupted. So in late February I got me a WRT54GL (I think I paid $50 - $60)
and installed DD-WRT on it right away. It's been up and running ever since I
got done configuring it, no reboots or other annoyances. It even displays its
uptime on the configuration web page and guess what? In a few days it will
have been up for 100 days. I'd call that a solid piece of hard/firmware. Go
get one, what are you waiting for? ;)

I use BrazilFW (formerly Coyote). It is very user friendly and works
very well on very old hardware. The only drawback is that a full sized
computer, even a really old, stripped down one, takes considerably more
power than a dedicated router.

If you are looking for a router that runs Linux, I've heard good things
about the Linksys WRT54GL, although I've never personally used one. You
can get them dirt cheap these days as well.
