Thanks for the additional information.  Neumann was not the most spirited of 
conductors (his Mahler 2 with the CPO is another example).  A Mahler 5 with 
Ancerl would have been a different story, as suggested by his Mahler 9 
recording with the CPO (and Stefek playing principal horn, most likely).

Couldn't agree more about Czech Phil. However, their 5 with Neumann as part of 
their set is disappointing because of the slow tempo of the Scherzo.
It exaggerates the Czech horns staccato and does Zdenek Tylsar a great 
disservice.

One of the more interesting versions of the Ring Cycle I have on CD is very 
definitely from 1968. Members of the Czech Phil. and Prague National Theatre 
orchestras recorded it in Nuremburg under Hans Swarowsky. It was part way 
through the recording that the Russian tanks entered Prague and over the next 
few days worried members of the orchestra returned over the border and were 
replaced on an ad hoc basis by musicians from the Nuremburg orchestras. Time 
left was filled in by recording Lohengrin.
