Thanks for the additional information. Neumann was not the most spirited of conductors (his Mahler 2 with the CPO is another example). A Mahler 5 with Ancerl would have been a different story, as suggested by his Mahler 9 recording with the CPO (and Stefek playing principal horn, most likely).

Hall [email protected] Ralph R. Hall http://www.brasshausmusic.com Hi Tom Reicher, Couldn't agree more about Czech Phil. However, their 5 with Neumann as part of their set is disappointing because of the slow tempo of the Scherzo. It exaggerates the Czech horns staccato and does Zdenek Tylsar a great disservice. One of the more interesting versions of the Ring Cycle I have on CD is very definitely from 1968. Members of the Czech Phil. and Prague National Theatre orchestras recorded it in Nuremburg under Hans Swarowsky. It was part way through the recording that the Russian tanks entered Prague and over the next few days worried members of the orchestra returned over the border and were replaced on an ad hoc basis by musicians from the Nuremburg orchestras. Time left was filled in by recording Lohengrin. Ralph R.
