The 130 doesn't care if the front edge is straight, it only cares if the
feed is straight, and from
watching it in operation I think it just checks to be sure that the edge
of the paper doesn't
move much during feed (which it would during an out-of-square misfeed).
I further suspect
that it does some kind of averaging over the paper edge to account for
edges that may wave in and out.
I deduce this from the fact that sometimes it concludes very quickly
(and with very little paper advanced)
that the paper is fine, and sometimes it advances many many feet before
concluding that the paper
feed is good enough.
Of course, it is MUCH easier to get the paper to load straight if the
front edge is square
since you can just jam the paper in and let it go (usually).
If you are careful to load the paper straight, you can feed it with a
badly out-of-square/ragged
edge. This almost always take more than a few tries, but that's how I do
it since I'm usually hacking
the end of the roll off with a pair of scissors and can't be bothered
with trying to create a really
square cut just for feeding.
I sure wish the built-in cutter would cope with canvas!

Thanks for bringing that up...I just know that both my 100 and 130
handle it with ease when loading from the front...Sure I suppose you
can build a pipe roller for
a few bucks to load from the back but you STILL have to square and
cut the leading edge for
each print by hand don't you?...Maybe I'm missing something here?...
