usually I don't work on a translation for long and I usually upload even few 
changes soon to avoid this situation. But the idea of some mechanism in the 
tracker to emulate a check out is good.

I would try to compare the files with Notepad++. (First populate the empty 
translation fields in one or both files with dummy strings.) Though you are 
better off concerning screens, I think I would manage this way. It shouldn't be 
more than 26 translations to copy. Plus those were one realizes that one 
translation is better than the other.
