Hi

Looking at this discussion I really wanted to share something over here
which was shared by one of my colleague.

One of an American ISV company off shored their work to India.

The technicians in India wanted to get trained in many areas like zVM but the Indian manager was too hesitant and said there should be lot of tickets
or incidents so that he can get a training. The saddest part was the
manager was not even literate on zOS systems. All he knew was to save cost. So slowly most of the wannabe system programmer left. Now he wants a 2 year
experienced guys to run equal to his peer.

So this is one of a case where they are not interested to address the skill
shortages.

So if the company doesn't pay for it the person should get the learning on his/her own.
I can't tell you how many times I have done this.
There are also REXX books as well as MVS books out there go buy them.
You can also learn a lot by being on here and learning from the conversation. Also as I have said before there are other (FREE) options like going to CBTTAPE.ORG. Most if not all the contributions are in source format. There was one person on here said that they didn't understand the report put out by DAF. The source is provided just go look at the routine and you will have a greater understanding what the report says. Also the SMF record layout is a wealth of information I used it and was able to understand most fields that can bounce you over to the control blocks book(s) which also has a wealth of information in them.

One time I was coding a JES exit and had to bounce around several books to get the information I needed. I understood the basics and went a looking and indeed found it but it takes individual what to learn this to "discover" things that you didn't know before. It also takes an individual that wants to learn not just sit back and ask questions all the time.

Another time we were waiting for a vendor to support over the line SWA. I glanced through the code (this one module) was given as source to the licensee. It took me a good 25 minutes to find the code and then seeing how I could fix it to get above the line CB's. I did it on my own as the vendor was less than interested in getting it fixed. I later called the vendor and told them I had fixed their code. If I had to have waited for the vendor to fix their code I would have blown my installation dead line.

It would helped if IBM hadn't of gone OCO but they did and you have to make do with what you have.

When one of the IBMer's on here says its not an API. He/She means it and if you get in there expect the code to break by a PTF or release.
