You make some excellent points. I've never thought of an extended
warranty as insurance, but it makes a heck of a lot more sense when
you think of it that way. In the past I've pretty much thought of
Macs as being flawlessly reliable, but I guess those days are gone,
with the advent of lower cost Macs, I believe Apple has lowered their
quality somewhat.

Yes, they are still well made, and probably better made than most (or
all of the competition) but none-the-less are probably made to a
lower cost standard. An example being the keyboard on my old Performa
is an "Apple Extended Keyboard II", weighs a ton, I believe has a
metal frame inside, great action on the keys and will probably never
wear out. On the other hand most of us know what these small, mostly
plastic "Apple USB Keyboards" that came with the iMac are like. They
can't hold a candle to the "Apple Extended Keyboard II" and I have
little doubt will eventually wear out or break. It's just the way
things are now, and I now realize enforces the potential need for
AppleCare as insurance.

Once again you're right. I think my next Mac (what ever it may be)
will come with AppleCare.
