Generally speaking, that's sound fiscal advice, but not so when
referring to entities with expected long service lives and expensive
service requirements such as health insurance, computers or cars. While
true that the odds are in the underwriter's favor during the AppleCare
coverage, it is also true that it is this period when you Mac has
probably its highest value/equity ratio and you stand the most to lose
*in case* something happens. It's the difference between finding
yourself in the last 6 mos. or the 3rd year and you have an isolated,
major problem in which the Mac is "totaled" and being able to sell it
for parts or get it repaired- or maybe even replaced at an upgrade- and
still be able to sell it, if you wanted, with some warranty left.

I realize you described there's not that much leeway in your Mac
budget, but that's all the more reason to get that security and protect
your investment for as long as possible. if you can possibly swing it.
