Yeah, repairing X can be much more difficult. That isn't really the fault of X so much as it is the fault of the OS X boot CDs. They lack the Finder so there is no way to get to the files on the hard drive. Other utility CDs do provide a Finder and thus give you full access to the drive. Or, you can build your own boot CD (but that can be a challenge itself, since last I knew, none of the CD burning software for OS X has a direct way of making a bootable CD). Or, do what many others have done... get a cheap firewire drive, and install a minimal OS X on it, or just use Carbon Copy Cloner to periodically mirror your main drive.
