I may be senile but I think that you said you had a
400 MHz iMac.  The 8 gig partition rule applies only
to tray-loading iMacs.   Specificially the 233 Bondi
Rev A&B, 266 Fruit-colored Models and the 333
Fruit-colored Models.

If you do in fact have a slot-loader you don't need to
partition at all, though some people do so just to
start off fresh.  I've installed Jaguar and Panther on
computers with and without partitioning.

As far as removing X you can reboot and use the drive
setup utility if you like as someone mentioned, though
I removed it on my 9500 by just throwing all the X
parts away while booted into 9 with absolutely no
problems, either operationally or testable with
Techtool Pro.
