Actually, if you're installing OS X on a 333 Tray-loader or earlier and you
have installed a hard drive larger than 8 gig, then you MUST partition the
hard drive.  Both 9 and X must remain within that first 8 gig partition.
The ROM won't recognize that an OS is installed if it (or any parts of it)
are outside of the first 8 physical gigs.  Panther won't let you install it
any other way on those machines, but earlier versions did.  I found all that
out the hard way...
