It's a shame that such a bug exists, is known about, yet the software
manufacturer doesn't work around it.
It is a shame. But, Microsoft is so big, they make the rules. :(

We had this same version of IMail
running on an NT server with half the memory, and a quarter of the processor
power, and never had an issue.
That's because of another problem with this scarce resource: apparently, Microsoft allocates the same amount of memory to it, no matter how much memory you have on the server. So if you have 16MB of RAM and have the problem, increasing to 1GIG of RAM won't help at all. Nor does Microsoft allow you to choose how much memory to allocate to this resource.

It's only since we switched to the new box
running 2K. It's more of a shame when IPSwitches tech support says, and I
quote exactly, "The machine sounds a bit lost inside.

Please run through the 7.13 install and reboot the server.
Your configuration will be preserved."

Are they serious, "sounds a bit lost inside"???? Who are they hiring to do
their tech support?
The problem here is that it's an issue-within-an-issue. There are quite a few possible reasons for SMTPD32.EXE errors, or COMCTL32.dll errors, or other similar issues. The issue with the scarce undocumented resource only is involved when the "0xc0000142" code appears. The reinstall would likely fix a lot of possible SMTPD32.exe errors. I wouldn't blame an Ipswitch tech for not recognizing the 0xc0000142 code (although senior level techs definitely should).

... I know it's a Windows problem at root, but since it affects IPSwitch's software, I
feel they should do something to work around it and not ignore it.
Understood. It's one of those nasty software "pass the buck" issues where both sides are at fault to some extent, and either one could probably fix it -- which means that either has the option of pointing the finger at the other.

Personally, I'd like to see both Ipswitch and Microsoft fix it. :)
