A router is a device which does just what it says; it routes packets of information from various computers to each other and out to the Internet. Think of it as a traffic cop directing traffic between cars on local surface streets and also out onto the highway via an on ramp. Cop might wave certain cars down certain surface streets, and some that want to get on the highway, the cop will direct them which lane to get into. That's a router, ... kinda.
