Ouch.  That is a very superficial type of love isn't it?  The Greeks had
multiple words for love including eros and agape.  The type of love you
are describing is the "eros" or inward focused selfish kind of love. 
There is a much grander "agape" type which I won't even try to describe
except to say it has to do with serving and is a sacrificial kind of
love....think about the men giving up their seats on the lifeboats of the
Titanic for the women and children.
