The downside of higher than 16 bit resolution is that you will often see in
real life user with 16 bit display setting. So, 24 bit image with much
shades will look terrible in these cases. A safer practice, IMHO, is to
correctly bring the resolution to 16 bit *with* dithering when authoring.
