It really depends on the pictures...
eg. a picture of a skyline - you will see banding in the sky...
set your display to 24 bit and put two copies of an  image next to each
other in PS - set one to 16 bit and the other to 24...
you'll see...
It also (actually fully) depends on your client - if he's a fotographer he
won't settle for 16 bit....
And if your project isn't stuffed with animated imagery it won't make a hell
of a perf. difference.
And you can still downgrade your images from 24 to 16 bit if performance
isn't satisfying.
