There's another viable option sometimes--globals.

That may sound trite, but sometimes it's the way to go. I did a project a 
while back where I had dozens of sprites that had to react to the position 
of a large travelling sprite. I could have used sendAllSprites to broadcast 
my traveler's location, but I chose to set a couple of globals. It ran much 
faster than the sendAllSprites version.
