Can't open xwindow as user in debian

Hi team,
I installed the i740 intel driver and it works a treat as root but won't run 
as user.  My system is debian 2 the processor celeron 300a with 64 
meg sdram(need more I think).  I need to be able to log on as user 
since netscape won't work from root.  I have stuffed up somewher but 
cannot find out where or how to fix it.  Your help greatly appreciated,
