Ben asked:
Hello everybody, I am new to Linux and I like what I see, I just bought
a new laptop with Vista installed and I would like to install Linux.
Wich flavor of Linux would you suggest, I'm just a typical web surfer
if that helps any.
I would recommed Ubuntu, I have tried a variety of Linux distros on both
my second box and my main and the two I find the most useful were Ubuntu
and Suse 10.3
I would not recommend the latter, is has an very long install process
and its package management is inferior to Ubuntu.
Ubuntu is easy to install, has excellent package management and software
installation. It does present connectivity problems on some machines and
is hopeless with wireless. Generally, all linux distros are not suitable
for playing games, though there are one or two distros more geared for
this than others.
I suggest you dual boot Vista and Ubuntu. Vista is not as bad as many
people make out and if you hard drive is big enough why not have the
best of both worlds. Use Vista's Shrink Volume tool (hidden in C: tools)
to reduce your Vista partition then install Ubuntu on the free space.
This will produce one partition with home and other directories in it,
and another for the swap file and is the simplest partitioning to start
off with.
It might pay you to check your hardware compatibility with Ubuntu in
case you have an unusual sound card or the like.
Best of luck - and enjoy.
