Update: I *LIKE* SimplyMEPIS 7.0! Never mind what they usually say
about dot-zero releases, this one looks good.
MEPIS has historically had much better ("3g") read-write support for
NTFS (i.e. WinNT and XP) than PCLinuxOS (read-only!), but PCLOS lets
you preview MP3 files in a file manager window simply by mousing over
them. I think MEPIS would be a better choice for a dual-boot-with-XP
system, PCLOS for the novice who wants to fully convert the machine in
question, or who collects a lot of MP3's.
MEPIS goes with the Mac-like "single-click" for everything by default,
though that's changeable under mouse settings; PCLOS goes with the
more Windows-like double-click-to-navigate-or-act by default.
I couldn't get MEPIS 6.5.02 to work at all with my Voodoo3/3000agp
video card, even with trying "cheat codes" at the boot prompt.
Apparently, judging by commentary on other fora, this model always
been problematic for Linux. MEPIS 7.0 works only if I use the "VESA"
option at the liveCD boot screen, but it does "just work"!
I've only tried it on my desktop so far, but I'm certainly going to
try it on my Compaq laptop. Stay tuned!
