NGE had a character for lolita fans to fixate on. It doesn't need
anything more than that. It's like doing a websearch and discovering
that there's more Sasami porn than there is of Ryoko and Aeka
combined (dunno if it's true or not, but I think I vaguely remember
someone mentioning that it probably is). It doesn't matter what the
story does with the characters. It's what the fans (and I use the
term loosely here...) do with them.
Well, Core said Anno had created kiddie porn, and that's a different
kettle of fish (who you talking about, anyway? Rei? Asuka? I'm not
familiar with the fan community, so I don't know who they tend to
focus on). Fans do stupid things, yes, but they do stupid things with
everything. Google slash fanfic for Star Trek sometime, or your
favorite comic book. Scary stuff.
I wouldn't exactly call it kiddie porn, but some of the characters and
their relationships with each other are verging on "you let these people
work in sensitive military projects???? Would you like to commit seppuku
now, or later when our misgivings are proven right?"
They still need to explain that damn space whale! You don't
introduce something like that without giving us some information on
how it got out there in the first place!
I really like the fact that they didn't, personally. It's bad plot
structure, true, but it's also reminiscent of real life -- there are
mysteries out there, and sometimes their mere existence is what
motivates us, not their resolution.
Personally, I think that's a "get out of jail" card for the SEED
franchise - if ever they want to make something on that angle, it's
there. Otherwise, it's just an intriguing detail.
