I understand that they tend to focus on Rei.
I never made it past episode 4 of NGE, so I have no idea if there's
something specific that prompts this fixation, or if it's just something
that people do.
There does seem to be a bit of a fixation on Rei (consistently the most
popular female Eva character, IIRC, perhaps one of the most popular in
anime). It may ironically have to do with her _lack_ of personality --
she's quiet and mysterious enough to be a perfect cipher, someone onto whom
one could project anything.
Also doesn't hurt (relative-popularity wise) that Asuka manages to make
herself nearly unlikeable by the end of the series.

kettle of fish (who you talking about, anyway? Rei? Asuka? I'm not
familiar with the fan community, so I don't know who they tend to
focus on).
