Wasn't that a retcon? In any event it would have been three of the
same unit. More like Victory and their eight Victory Gundam units. It
makes more sense realistically to have eight units of the same design
collecting data than to try and design four mobile suits without any
data at all.
There would have been three Gundams altogether though, if the story
followed the novel and if the Cyclops team hadn't attacked Libot.
There would have been the Gundam RX-78-2, the G-3, and the Alex. But
not all at the same time.
Who would have gotten the Gundam if Amuro had ended up with the Alex?
