Competing prototype example?

F-22 vs. F-23

Real life, and not all that long ago.

I don't know off-hand if anyone's done a similar test with a single multi-role vehicle versus more specialized units, but the US military bounces back and forth between the two concepts (i.e. F-4 to F-14 to F-18), so obviously people frequently reconsider the positives of each.
