Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well, and that you’re looking forward to the weekend. If you’ve got
something planned, then I hope it goes well! I hope you will be able to join me
for the last Look North of the week. We’ll have the detailed forecast for the
weekend from Paul and also tonight, if you’re a fan of Strictly Come Dancing,
then there’ll be something of interest to you in the programme tonight. If
you’re a big sporting person, then we’ll be talking about the Look North sports
awards. They’re taking place on Monday at Scunthorpe and they’re being hosted
by Rob Bonnet and we’ll be talking to Rob tonight on the programme at 6.30pm,
the usual time.

Mail

Thanks very much indeed for all the emails and letters and texts over the past
week. It’s been an extremely busy week indeed. I was talking about dentists in
the Levy Letter yesterday. Just a quick one here from Donna. She says, “You
mentioned in your Levy Letter yesterday that the dentist situation around the
country is appalling and I just found out that in Driffield, it’s about to get
worse. After being one of the lucky ones being kept on by one practice, I have
just been informed that my children aged six and three, will now have to be
private patients, at a cost of £5 each. I’m not sure what to do. Obviously I
can’t afford more outgoings a month. I have a pretty good job, but I don’t know
how others are going to cope in the area. I’m just about to look at getting
dental care by some other means, but what, I do not know. It just annoys me no
end that I pay national insurance for dental care, yet have to pay again for
myself and my children.” So that was one of several em!
ails on the subject of dentists. Don’t forget if there’s something you’d like
to write in about, then it’s [EMAIL PROTECTED] And thanks to Donna for that one!

Just a quick note here. This one comes from the Community Voluntary Car Service
from Pat. She says, “Can you please slip in a quick mention for the Community
Voluntary Car Service in Sutton-on-Sea, who are holding their Christmas Fayre
on Saturday 3rd December. We do loads for the local community and we’re hoping
to raise some funds. There’ll be loads of goodies, including gifts, cakes and
raffle.” So good luck to the Community Voluntary Car Service with their
Christmas Fayre tomorrow 3rd December in Sutton-on Sea.

And a quick mention here. This one comes from Brian, who says, “Would you
please give a mention and wish my wife Hazel a very happy anniversary of
forty-four years for the 2nd December!” That comes from Brian Abey. So happy
anniversary to Brian and Hazel!

Twins

Whenever you write about or talk about twins, it always generates a lot of
interest, even amongst those of us who haven’t got twins in the family, it’s
always fascinating. I was reading this morning that twins are less intelligent
than their single brothers and sisters. By the age of seven, twins have an
average IQ of 5.3 points lower than the single boy children in the same
families a study has revealed. At nine years old, they are scoring six points
lower. The researchers said that the difference may be because twins are more
likely to be born prematurely and have a low birth weight. A previous study
showed that smaller babies grow up to become less intelligent. The 2001
research, from the University of Edinburgh, found that children who weighed
less than five and a half pounds at birth have lower IQs at the age of eleven.
So there you are on the subject of twins. If you are a twin and you disagree
with that research, then do drop me a line over the weekend.

Levy Letter

If there’s someone you know who hasn’t got a Levy Letter or who isn’t signed
up for the Levy Letter, then get them to sign up over the weekend. All they’ve
got to do is to go to either one of the two addresses at the bottom of the
screen, click on Levy Letter and then follow the instructions through. And you
should receive your Levy Letter on Monday morning!

Climate

I’ll have to speak to Paul about this one, but every day I pick up the paper
and there’s another story about climate and the future. Well, it’s an
environmental hiccup that could leave Britain in the cold. Well, what am I
talking about? It’s something called the Deep Sea Conveyer Belt that carries
warm water to Britain’s shores. Apparently, it’s slowing down. Scientists have
found evidence that the force driving the Gulf Stream, the warm current
responsible for (can you believe this) England’s mild climate, is weakening.
This could lead to a possible one Celsius drop in temperature over the next two
decades. More alarmingly, it may indicate the start of a much more dramatic
change with more severe effects on the climate. If the conveyer actually ground
to a halt, as more extreme forecasts predict, the average temperatures could
drop by ten Celsius in Britain and north west Europe. So there you are. I don’t
know why I’m talking about this, because we’ve got a trained Met Man !
in the form of his lordship, but it’s an interesting one to read about. I must
ask Paul about it.

Pictures

Don’t forget if you’ve got a picture or a photograph that you’re particularly
proud of from around the region, then send it in. Either send in a hard copy in
the post, or via email. Every night we use one of those views on the programme
on the Big Screen. So send it in as soon as possible to either BBC Look North
Pictures, Queens Court, Queens Gardens, Hull, HU1 3RH, or electronically to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

And also just a reminder that it’s not too late to pick up one of the Children
in Need calendars! They’re still on sale at our receptions in Lincoln, Grimsby
and Hull and on our two buses. They’re £5 of course and all proceeds go to
Children in Need.

And finally, thanks to everyone who has written in about I’m A Celebrity. I
found it almost impossible to write about this as no sooner have I written it,
then it’s out of date, because it gets so much coverage. Nevertheless, everyone
seems to be talking very highly about Carol Thatcher, saying what a star she’s
been. I have to say that I like Sheree Murphy as well. And of course, we have
to have an interest in Bobby Ball staying in one piece, because of course, he’s
got to come straight to Hull for rehearsals for pantomime!

Well, that’s it for now and for this week. Have a very good weekend, whatever
you’re doing and join me tonight, BBC1 at 6.30pm.

Take care

Peter
