Hello, it’s Peter here. Thank you for joining us and welcome to Thursday’s Levy
Letter. I hope your day is going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me
tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

Tonight, we’ll have all the day’s news, plus we’ll reveal the answer to our
exclusive Levy Letter Jo Brand competition. We asked what Jo’s profession was
before she became a comedienne. Well the lucky winner is Dave Barron from
Thorngumbald, but for all of you, who don’t know the answer to the question,
well tune in tonight to find out. But for Dave, there’ll be tickets to go see
Jo Brand perform in York, so I hope you enjoy it Dave! Congratulations!

We’ll also be talking to the best selling author, Ian Rankin, on why he’s in
Hull. All will be revealed on Look North at 6.30pm if you can make it. Also, a
scheme in our region has been launched to tackle speeding drivers. Have you
heard of this? Speed-setters are driving on our roads at the speed limit, in
order to keep us all driving under the speed limit! More than two hundred
people have already signed up to the Speed Setters scheme and are our on our
roads now, driving at the speed limit to keep us all under the legal limit.
What do you think of this one? Also tonight, we’re looking at the growing
number of thefts from our churches. Parishes are facing the dilemma of
protecting themselves from vandalism and thefts by keeping their doors closed
to the public, but by doing so are they no longer the sanctuary they should be
for visitors? I hope you can join me tonight for Look North on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

Lunch

Now if you’re grabbing a sarnie whilst sitting at your desk at work, then
you’re not alone. There’s a survey out today that says lunch breaks are getting
shorter. Apparently, the average is now down to (can you believe this?)
nineteen minutes and forty-two seconds – that’s six minutes shorter than six
months ago! So much for the lunch hour! It’s all to do with the macho culture
and dedication to work. Now lunch is thought to be for wimps! So there you are.
If you’re getting a lunch hour then you’re doing very well. Apparently, the
average is now down to nineteen minutes and forty-two seconds. I have to say,
that that’s true for me! If you have a view on lunch hours then let me know.
One in four UK office workers claim they never take a lunch break at all. Two
thirds of the office workers surveyed say they feel that working through their
lunch break is having a positive impact on how they are viewed within the work
place. In other words, people are scared to take their lunch !
hour. Seven out of ten people, that’s 69%, eat their lunch at their desk,
juggling phone, screen and sandwich, ignoring the advice about the improvements
a break can have on well-being and productivity. Your views on lunch hours are
gratefully received as always. Don’t forget if you want to drop me a line on
that or on anything else, then it’s [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Paul

Paul is on holiday now from yesterday for a few days and I think he’s picked
the right time. According to the paper, Britain shivers at minus ten with icy
blasts from the east and temperatures plummeting. The Big Chill was set to
worsen as Britain prepares for temperatures of minus ten! And the cold spell is
to continue into the weekend with easterly winds bringing cold air from Siberia
that has left Russia at a January low of minus thirty-eight Celsius. So, we can
only see from that, that Paul knew what the weather was going to be like, which
is why he’s decided to take some time off!

Quiz Shows

Those of us, who have done the quiz shows on the radio or TV, will know that
sometimes people can say the daftest things under pressure. Well, some of them
now have been compiled and they are quite funny. Eamonn Holmes on the National
Lottery Jet Set – What’s the name of the playwright commonly known by the
initials G.B.S.? Answer given – William Shakespeare! On University Challenge –
what was Ghandi’s first name? – Answer was Goosey Goosey! Anne Robinson from
the Weakest Link – In traffic, what J is where two roads meet? – Answer given
from the contestant was jool carriageway! On BBC Radio Newcastle (I’m sure they
never have anything like this on BBC Radio Humberside or Lincolnshire) - How
long did the six day war between Egypt and Israel last? – The contestant
answered, after a long pause, fourteen days! And finally, on Family Fortunes
(how we loved it!) - Name a bird with a long neck – Answer Naomi Campbell! So
there you are. If you’ve got any favourites to add to this li!
 st, then let me know.

Kathy Kirby

I remember, as a little boy, although I can’t remember how old I was, but I was
absolutely mesmerised by Kathy Kirby. She used to have those very shiny lips.
If you’re of a similar age, then I’m sure you’ll remember her too, especially
if you’re male! Well, a three-way race is emerging with Denise Van Outen,
Katherine Jenkins and Jane Horrocks for the lead in the new West End show based
on the life of the sixties singing legend Kathy Kirby. They’re all battling it
out for this musical, which is about to open. I would have thought that
Katherine Jenkins was perhaps the natural choice for playing Kathy Kirby. And
by the way, Katherine is going to be giving that concert at the Humber Bridge
in the summer to mark the 25th anniversary and I’ll be talking to Katherine on
the programme on Friday. That’s tomorrow, BBC1 at 6.30pm.

Contraceptive Pill

For many years, as you know, women have been put off taking the contraceptive
pill for fear that they will pile on the pounds. The popular believe has been
that taking the oral contraceptive pill can make them put on extra weight.
Well, a review, which is just published today, shows that this is a myth. A
large scale review showed there to be no link between using the pill and
significant weight gain! And talking of weight gain, by the way, I mentioned
briefly the GI diet earlier in the week when I was talking about Gillian
McKeith. I’ve had loads of emails in from people saying that they’re on the GI
diet and are having great success. I think we should draw a veil now over
healthy eating and diets for a bit, because we seem to have been stuck on it
for four or five days now. But thank you very much for getting in touch with me
about that and also thank you to those of you, who have written in giving me
advice on how to get VHS tapes on to DVD. I gather, as several people ha!
ve written in to tell me, that I need to buy a machine, which is available and
I’m going to try and find one on Saturday. So thanks for all the help and
advice on that and also on the digital camera as well. By the way, we’re also
working on a way to get digital pictures out to you on email in the Levy
Letter. So that’s looking like it might be possible. But for everyone, who’s
asked about the digital camera, then thank you very much indeed. I’m getting on
with it reasonably well, although I could do with some decent weather so that I
can take some good pictures. Along with everyone else, as soon as the sun came
out last Saturday, I went out and took pictures of the Humber Bridge, but I
think they leave a lot to be desired.

Kissing

And finally for Thursday’s Levy Letter – regular kissing is good for your
health and women prefer it to making love, a survey has suggested! In the study
of more than five hundred men and women, aged between sixteen and ninety-one,
most men said they felt that kissing was more of a duty and obligation, but,
listen to these figures carefully, 56% of women said they enjoyed kissing and
willingly kissed. 60% of women said that kissing was more important than sex
compared to only 24% of men! So there you are. The only fly in the ointment on
this one, was that the study was carried out in Germany and Austria! So do we
think it would be any different if the survey was carried out over here? Well,
I suspect that it wouldn’t one jot!

Thank you for reading. Join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm. Don’t forget, if you
want to write to me, then drop me a line. You can contact me anytime. If you’ve
got any pictures or photographs, that you’d like me to see or a story that you
think we should know about that one of our journalists could look into, then
send me the details and your contact telephone number to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Take care

Peter
