Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm for
all the day’s news and Lisa will have the forecast. Tonight, we’ll have a Leave
it to Levy and also one of the most distinguished actors in this country, John
Hurt. John is in town to receive a special award in Hull and I’ll be talking to
him on the sofa tonight.

This special chat with John will be available throughout the weekend on our
website. Just go to www.bbc.co.uk/humber and click on the link to John Hurt and
watch my chat with John. In fact, all of Look North bulletins can be viewed
again on our website and are updated each time a new bulletin is broadcast, so
have a look at our websites at www.bbc.co.uk/humber or
www.bbc.co.uk/lincolnshire for more info on this.

Also tonight, I’ll be helping out many viewers in Hull, who have contacted me
about a continuing problem with power cuts in Hull. Many businesses are
suffering in the affected areas, so I’ll be speaking to a representative from
YEDL to get some answers for you all. Also tonight, we’ll be live in
Bridlington. Find out why rail passengers are set to enjoy a train journey with
a difference, which will make the orient express look tame! A busy show
tonight, so I hope you can join me at the usual time of 6.30pm.

Funny Things

I was reading yesterday in the letter, some of the funny things that have been
said on quiz shows on radio and TV. It’s prompted quite a few emails in, so
thank you very much for those. Keep those coming in about anything you’ve heard
that’s funny on the TV. This one comes from Graham Avery from Boston. This
happened on a Kentish radio station quiz a few years ago. The question was, -
what day of the week did Good Friday fall in 1945? And the answer from the
contestant, who was on the phone to the radio station was – Thursday!

This one comes from Peter from Louth. He sends a few in from Radio Lincolnshire
Phone-In. Which is the largest Spanish speaking country in the world?
Contestant – Barcelona! The presenter says, “I was really after the name of a
country! The contestant on Radio Lincolnshire says, “I’m sorry, I don’t really
know the name of any countries in Spain!” Well, that’s wonderful!

A few here from the Weakest Link. Anne Robinson asks, Which Italian city is
overlooked by Vesuvius? Contestant – Bombay! What insects are commonly found
hovering over lakes? Contestant – Crocodiles! Can you believe that? Another one
from Anne Robinson – In olden times, what were minstrels? Were they travelling
entertainers or chocolate salesmen? Can you believe this? The contestant
answered chocolate salesmen! They’re wonderful aren’t they? If you’ve got any
more suggestions, then do let me know. Keep them coming in if you’ve heard of
any on the radio or TV.

Carbon Monoxide

I just wanted to put a quick line in. I did mention it on the TV last night. We
mentioned about the carbon monoxide detectors last night and we’ve had so much
response on this. Loads of phone calls and people getting in touch. We only had
five detectors to give away, so obviously a lot of very disappointed people, so
I’m sorry about that. Many people are making the point, that if they’ve got the
money to have a computer and to email, then they’ve got the money to buy a
carbon monoxide detector and what about those people who haven’t got a
computer. I have taken those comments on board for future things that we do. So
thank you very much for those comments. I have done some research on the carbon
monoxide detectors and they do vary in price from some as cheap as a fiver,
which obviously aren’t as sophisticated as others, which go up to about £35.00.
I think we all know the benefits of them now, and for everyone who got in touch
for a detector, then thank you very much.

Awards

Look North’s coverage of the Joanne Nelson murder case is in the running to win
a top television award. The TV’s equivalent to the movie’s Oscars are held in
London in February. The Look North reporters, Jo Makel and Linsey Smith,
produced and researched the special programme, which we broadcast on the day
the case came to an end. And now they’ve both got a nomination at the Royal
Television Society awards. It’s a great tribute to the intelligence and
sensitivity, which they approached such an emotional and tragic story. So our
congratulations to Look North’s reporters, Jo Makel and Linsey Smith. Of
course, we’ll keep you up to date on the result. The dinner is held in London
in February. We’ll let you know the outcome.

How Long You Have To Start A Family

Many women, who put off having babies to pursue a career, suffer from the
constant worry that they’re leaving it too late. Now a test kit is on the
market, which tells them how long they have remaining on their biological
clock. The £180 kit works out how many healthy eggs a woman has left in her
ovary. The creators say that this will help her judge when is the best time to
start a family and provide an early warning of any potential problems. Other
experts warned, however, that it could give women a false sense of security.
They said that, as well as a decline in eggs, other problems such as blocked
fallopian tubes or low sperm counts can be to blame for infertility. The best
age for a woman to conceive apparently, it’s between eighteen and thirty-five.
But at the moment, 15% of new mums in Britain are actually older than
thirty-five.

Stress

Making love is the best way of keeping stress at bay, research is suggesting.
Scientists have discovered that a night of passion with your partner can have a
dramatic effect on your ability to cope with high pressure. They found that
when people were put in a stressful situation, their blood pressure returned to
normal much faster if they had made love recently. So there you are, if you’re
under stress, then get making love, because that will help!

By the way, I’ve had a lot of people asking me how I’ve been sleeping since I
had the acupuncture the other night on the programme. Well, I have to say that
even though it’s only been two nights, I have been sleeping very well. I’m not
sure if that’s just coincidence or psychological or if it’s a direct result of
the treatment with acupuncture. But I have to say that if it is down to the
acupuncture, and one has to be reasonably sceptical, then I would certainly go
back and try some more, because I have been quite impressed so far. So touch
wood, for the last couple of nights, I have had a good sleep!

Photographs

If you’ve got any photographs that you think I should see – we had a funny one
of a road sign yesterday, which we used on the programme, or any moving
pictures that you think I’d like to see, then send them to me in the post or
via email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Our postal address is BBC Look North, Queens
Court, Queens Gardens, Hull, HU1 3RH. Whether it’s newsy, or just funny, or
just unusual, then please send it in to me. I’d love to hear from you.

Well, that’s it from for today. I hope you can join me tonight on BBC1 at
6.30pm. Enjoy your weekend and thanks for reading the Levy Letter this week.

Take care

Peter
